In an effort to achieve the organization's mission, KORD focuses on projects that will benefit the local environment and the lives of the outgrowers. KORD does not act as a sole financial provider of projects or perform the infrastructure development, instead they co-fund projects with donors and contract with engineers and skilled experts.
All of KORD's activities focus on:
Identifying needs and potential projects
Getting agreements on project priorities
Managing the financing of projects
Timely and effective project management-
The following is a list of KORD's Projects:
ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN (OVC)
The OVC project is aimed at strengthening care and pyscho-social support for orphans and other vulnerable children in the Kakira sugarcane outgrowers' catchment area. KORD, in partnership with HIPS, have supported directly 200 selected OVC and indirectly many more. Yet, there are many more OVC that are still in need of support.
KORD supports OVC through the following activities:
-sponsorship through paying school fees and providing scholastic materials
-access to pyscho-social support with peer mentoring and counseling
-uplifting of the socio-economic capacity of OVC households through through income generating activities
-ensuring food security, nutrition, and healthcare
-facilitating workshops and sports events for OVC and school supervisors
-training for leaders, teachers, and caretakers on life planning, child protection, behavorial changes and communication skills
INFRASTRUCTURE
In January 2007, KORD with support from the outgrowers department, held community meetings to come to an agreement on priority infrastructure projects for KORD to implement with its approved budget.
Each sub-county agreed on 3 major priority projects including construction of roads, schools, health facilities and water /environmental management.
Project funds were allocated depending on the quantity of cane supplied by each Zone and according to KSW reports.
Completed Projects-
1 chemistry, biology and physics laboratory at Busede College
1 chemistry, biology and physics laboratory at Buyengo SS
5 classroom block at Baitambogwe SS
3 classroom block at Bufulbui
1 science laboratory at Nawampiti
3 classroom block at Wabulungu
1 science laboratory at St. Stephen in Budondo
26 swampy roads covering 25km have been rehabilitated in the 17 sub-counties of Mayuge, Iganga, Jinja, Kamuli
KORD FUEL STATION
KORD’s idea to construct a fuel station to facilitate outgrower farmers who supply sugarcane to Kakira Sugar Works and their transporters to access fuel is now a reality. KORD station was prioritized as a vital project to address the transport problems faced by outgrowers who supply sugarcane to Kakira Sugar Works. Shell Uganda Ltd.manages the petrol station and farmers access fuel at a discount price and receive credit, payable at the expiry of the farmer's permit. It can also accessed by non-out growers, at normal fuel prices.
LOANS
A lump sum of Ushs. 400,000,000/= (four hundred million) is fixed in Tropical Bank to induce the bank to lower the interest rates to 17% per year. By now, about 800 outgrowers have accessed about 2 billion shs to boost their sugarcane production at an interest rate of 17% only. KORD encourages all registered farmers, who would wish to get loans to use this opportunity and the other unregistered farmers to grow more cane, register it and therefore be eligible to benefit from this loan facility.
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
KORD in conjunction with funding and support from the French Embassy have implemented a solid waste project in Kakira Town Council. The French Embassy co-financed the project with 76,000,000/= (seventy-six million shillings) and KORD contributed 18,300,000/= (eighteen million and three hundred thousand shillings only) and Kakira Town Council contributed 4,000,000/= (four million shillings). A tipper lorry and skips were procured and garbage banks constructed. Residents of Kakira Town Council also participated in sensitization on waste management. KORD and Kakira Town Council are currently look for funding to implement a liquid waste manangement program.
DIARY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
KORD, through partnerships with other organizations with similar objectives, supported participatory research for technology development of molasses blocks (MUB) and local feedstuff for improved diary cattle productivity in Uganda. Uganda National Council of Science and Technology assisted in funding the diary improvement study. The project research was carried out by Makerere University Faculty of Agriculture, Uganda Diary Development Authority, Kakira Sugar Works, KORD, and the local government. A hundred and three farmers participated in the study and the molasses-based feed (milk booster) produced by Kakira was distributed to farmers in Kamuli, Jinja, Mayuge, Iganga, and Mukono Districts. Results indicated 36% improvement in milk production. However, the study results are yet to be published. Currently, KORD is working with Kakira to produce and commercialize the milk booster product.
WORLD BANK FUND
The partnership agreement between KSW and the World Bank for carbon credit will benefit KORD with 171,000 Euros. This money will be spent on 7 contruction projects along with educational and health infrastrucutral development within the outgrowers' area.
IMPROVED COOKSTOVES
KORD is currently carrying out a pilot project in partnership with AFREPREN/FWD and SESSA to install improved institutional cookstoves in schools located in the Kakira Sugarcane farmers catchement area. The purpose of the project is to reduce polluted emissions, conserve natural resources, and improve the health of the outgrowers population through installatiion of energy saving cookstoves for institutions and households. KORD also distributed household cookstoves to several OVC families. A survey is also being conducted by a consultant to assess the needs and situations of energy use in the outgrowers catchment 4 disctricts. KORD will be analysing this data in accordance with the impact of both the household and institutional cookstoves on the health, finances and environmental impact on the outgrowers catchment area to determine the next best step. KORD is looking forward to continuing its partnership with AFREPREN/FWD and is also pursuing additional funding sources and to partner with other organizations focused on energy saving technologies to expand the project.
MALARIA PROJECT
Funding was recently secured from AFFORD (a malaria consortium) for long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs). Three thousand nets were secured (worth 45 million shs) and distributed to pregnant mothers and children below 5 years in the ougrowers' region of Busedde sub-county in Jinja District.
